when wanting to rent a house remember this

Filed under: info tech — keldog at 7:45 pm on Sunday, August 1, 2010

What I learnt when the consumer affairs man came to our school:

  • Be cautious of scammers, especially in Ballarat and Geelong.
  • You may find it easier to get a house if you go though the uni. See the student advisor/counsellor and they can recommend dealers to go through so that you avoid any scams etc.
  • There are forms for everything
  • First appearances matter, treat it like a job interview
  • You need at least two referees
  • Do not apply for a house that is advertised in the paper or has a mobile contact only
  • Board at uni or board with a friend
  • Check the lease for any ridiculous conditions
  • You have 2-3 days to search for any existing damage made to the house
  • You need to have proof that the damage was there before you move in there

Help! I can’t work out how to do it!

Write a post briefly outlining the following:-

  1. media type
  2. what each one features – content, can you print, save etc?
  3. usefulness
  4. user friendly
  5. Would you recommend this site?
  6. what  appealed to you in each link?
  7. Which style would you prefer to use?

Link 1.

  1. Text, screen dumps(images)
  2. Links, search engine,
  3. Yes, it was very descriptive. The screen dumps and written descriptions where very straight forward
  4. Very user friendly. Easy to read/use/understand
  5. Yes. Simple to use. Very helpful
  6. The information provided

Link 3.

  1. Video
  2. Pause, play, fast forward
  3. Useful… it was a bit hard to understand the tutor as he was not very clear, almost mumbling, so I had to listen to it twice
  4. Very user friendly. It was easy to use because all you have to do it press the play button.
  5. I probably would not recommend this site because as I said, the tutor was fairly hard to understand.
  6. The step by step was really helpful. Since you can’t understand him it was really good to see how to do it.

Link 4

  1. Video
  2. Pause, play, fast forward
  3. Fairly useful. It explained all I needed to know. Perhaps could have a been a little more detailed.
  4. Very user friendly. It was very straight forward.
  5. Yes I would recommend this site
  6. The pictures that where used in the video were very helpful as they made the learning experience easier. The way tutor explained how the worldwide web worked was perfectly structured.

Which style would I prefer to use?

I think I would like to use the link 4. The video was simple and the tutor was very clear.

Ballarat University student talk via Elluminate

Filed under: info tech — keldog at 9:48 pm on Thursday, May 13, 2010

Yesterday the 13th of May, our unit 3/4 Information Technology class spoke to Hein, a senior student currently studying his last year at the University of Ballarat.

The program that allowed us to speak to Hein was called Elluminate. It consists of two possible techniques to communicate; A microphone so the members in that session can hear you, and also the chat technique, where the members of the session can type what they have to say and it will ebcome visable to everyone else participating in the session. it also has a whiteboard that the whole group can watch slides adn interact on.

We discussed what Hein was studying at Uni and also what it took for him to get their. Being on his final year of his four year University course of  Teaching, he said he was glad to be in his final year so that he can actually persure his life long ambition of Teaching. He told us that he would like to teach grade 5 or 6s or even perhaps year 7 and 8s.

The journey for hein to actually even get to Uni was not a very successful one to start off with as he  did not recieve a high enough Enter Score to get into his rpeferred course. Also, the fact that he was not a ‘mature age student’ according to the Ballarat Uni, meant that he had to wait an extra 3 years after finishing High School, as he was a 17 year old graduate.

Hein told us all a few tips for when we get to Uni.

  • always hand work in on time
  • get help if you need it becuase the tutors will not come to you, as they do in High School
  • manage your time, if you want to spend more time drinking than finishing assignments, the tutors will not sympathise and will fail you.
  • having a group of friends that can support you andhelp you throughout your University life is an important thing as they can motive you to succeed when you are feeling as though you’ve had enough.

Hein was a first time user of Elluminate and in my point of view I thought he did a magnificant job!

Facebook ‘faces’ some issues + gone phishing!

Filed under: info tech — keldog at 7:29 pm on Wednesday, March 3, 2010
  1. Tell me a little about Elliott Fletcher and Trinity Bates?

Elliott Fletcher was a 12 year old boy who died from a fatal stab wound to the chest, allegedly inflicted by a 13 year old boy at school.

Trinity Bates was a 12 year old girl who was murdered and left in a storm drain only100m away from her house.

  1. Why is facebook involved and why is there an issue?

There were tribute pages put up for these two children  then other people posted porn on their sites.

You may ask how these two school students are linked. Surprisingly, the thing that links these two students is the social chat site called facebook.

Facebook is involved in all this as recently, facebook pages that have been set up to honour the lives of these poor children have been vandalised and ruined. Four people allegedly posted pornography on the memorial site for Trinity and another debate had come up about facebook after similar defacing happened to the page set up for Elliott Fletcher.

When the issue of this vandalism was brought to the attention of facebook staff, they responded to reports by users by removing the offensive groups and disabling defamers’ accounts. Although in the end this was done, many people said it was not done quickly enough as it took about 24 hours for facebook to step into action. In that time, the damage had already been done.

To see this sort of behaviour disgusts me. I don’t see what people would get out of defacing memorial pages that honour school aged children who suffered horrific deaths. I think that facebook really need to step up here and take more control of what is said on their site. They need to own up to what they have done and fix their site to prevent this from happening again and hurting more people.

Phishing: In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames and passwords. if you recieve any phising messages, such as “updating program, confirm password, please click here” You should  NEVER go into suss message such as this. you will be at risk of viruses adn other nasty things. Remember to always beaware and think twice before entering links.

think about it 1-11

  1. Think about it 1-11

What kinds of courses would you benefit most from online learning?

Any course would benefit from online learning.

What do you think is lost when you have no face-to-face teacher?

There would be a loss of communication skills without a face-to-face teacher.

Do you think online learning could ever replace schools as we know them?

I think online learning could replace schools. It is convenient because you can learn from home. The only disadvantage would be that students sometimes prefer a teacher to have some one on one help, this can become a problem if online learning where to replace schools.
